Thu Mar 26, 2015 7:30 PM - Resolved: Religion is bad for America

Speaker: Atheist / Christian Debate at ASU - Dan Barker v Jay Richards

Location:ASU Education Lecture Hall
100 E Gammage Parkway
Tempe, Arizona

Contact: Jennifer White

Sponsor : Freedom From Religion Foundation - Valley of the Sun Chapter

The blurb didn't say this but Dan Barker wrote the book "Losing Faith in Faith" which I thought was a really good book.

Dan Barker used to be a fundamentalist Christian nut job until he went on the search for the "correct" Christian sect which led him to atheism.

Dan Barker was a well know Christian musician and his constant dealings with different Christian sects that believed conflicting teachings started him on his search for the "correct" version of Christianity.

And of course the book documents that search for the real and true version of Christianity which Dan Barker never found.

In the past Dan Barker has teamed up with Arizona Republic editorial cartoonist Steve Benson and they put on a hilarious skit called "Toon's and Tune's" where Dan Barker sings the songs he wrote when he was a well know Christian song writer and Steve Benson shows and explains the hidden meanings behind many of his editorial cartoons that ran in the Arizona Republic.

Sat Mar 14, 2015 3:00 PM - The Necessity of Secularism

Speaker: Dr. Ronald Lindsay, President Center for Inquiry

Location:Humanist Community Center
627 W. Rio Salado Parkway
Mesa, Arizona

Sponsor : Meetup

There is some question as if this meeing starts at 3pm or 4pm.

Check this URL for more details.

CFI President Ron Lindsay will be discussing his new book, The Necessity of Secularism: Why God Can’t Tell Us What to Do, which has recently been published by Pitchstone, a leading publisher of Freethought books.

The central thesis of The Necessity of Secularism is that in a religiously pluralistic society, a robust thoroughgoing secularism is the only reliable means of preserving public order and freedom for all.

Secularism is not just another term for the separation of church and state. Secularism implies not only a secular state but a secular society, that is, one in which religion remains in the private domain. In particular, religious precepts should have no place in public policy debates.

Using religious precepts as a basis for discussing public policy shuts down the conversation: you can't dispute someone's faith, and the religious precepts are relevant only to those who already accept them. With respect to the claim that we need to consider religion in connection with public policies that have moral implications, that claim assumes morality is based on religion, and The Necessity of Secularism decisively refutes that claim.

Ronald A. Lindsay is president and CEO of the Center for Inquiry. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. The Necessity of Secularism: Why God Can’t Tell Us What To Do is his second book. His first book, Future Bioethics: Overcoming Taboos, Myths, and Dogmas, was published by Prometheus Books in June 2008. He is also the author of the entry on “Euthanasia” for the prestigious International Encyclopedia of Ethics (Wiley Blackwell 2013).

There's a decidedly Lefty slan... [Wonder if there are any songs about us Libertarians who want to legalize ALL drugs, legalize gay marriage, and think every American has a God given right to have an AK-47 and RPG to protect themselves from government tyranny?]

This is a special joint meeting of Americans United for Separation of Church & State – Greater Phoenix Chapter, Freedom from Religion Foundation – Valley of the Sun Chapter, and the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix.

Have you heard one of those horror stories where someone who was aging & beginning to not be able to fully take care of their affairs, fell victim to family or friends (with differing philosophies or religious beliefs) that insisted on changing things in ways that were counter to the wishes of the individual causing great upheaval & distress. These stories are sad. The good news is that there are ways to plan for your end-of-life, your eventual death, and your effects post-death, that are laid out clearly & as ironclad as possible. Please join us on Sunday, February 22nd to learn what you need to do to insure your wishes, or the wishes of a loved one, are followed to the letter.

Speaker: Paul Premack, Elder Law and Estate Planning

When: Sunday, February 22nd, 2015 10:00 am

Where: Humanist Community Center, 627 W Rio Salado Parkway, Mesa

Paul Premack will address topics such as how to avoid Guardianship by advance incapacity planning, including Medical Directives, Powers of Attorney and Trusts; how to pay for a nursing home without losing all of your assets; how your complex Will may need to be simplified under the current estate tax system; and how to avoid probate and save taxes using community property laws and other techniques. He will explain how his book, The Senior Texan Legal Guide, can be used in Arizona to prepare for a meeting with your attorney. He will also discuss how to find a qualified attorney in Arizona who can assist with proper legal planning.

Paul Premack is Certified as an Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation (located in Tucson). He has been recognized as a Five Star Wealth Manager by Texas Monthly Magazine and was recently recognized as a “Top 100 Lawyer” in Wills, Trusts and Estates by the National Advocates. His law practice encompasses estate planning for all age groups, probate to assist surviving heirs when a family member dies, and elder law to assist Seniors with specific legal challenges.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Doors open at 9:00 for socializing with an optional breakfast available for a $5 donation. The meeting begins at 10:00.

Speaker: How YOU can help stop the Religious Right’s attempts to create a theocracy in America!

Location:Macayo’s Mexican Restaurant
4001 N Central Ave
Just south of Indian School Road
Phoenix, AZ

We will focus on how YOU can help stop the Religious Right’s attempts to create a theocracy in America!

AGENDA:

  • Welcome/Introductions
  • Freethought Political Action Fund – Utilizing the Same Tools as Our Opposition
  • Pledge of Allegiance Protest (If you have children/grandchildren in school, there are things you need to know as the protest is gaining popularity with students)
  • Invocation Project & How You Can Help
  • Faith Based Initiatives Office Brewer just Announced ** & Problematic Legislation We Should Anticipate in the Next Session
  • Open Discussion
** We’ll examine of one of the most problematic ”Faith-based Initiative” scams - “Crisis Pregnancy Centers”. Millions in Federal dollars go to these church run Crisis Pregnancy Centers that intentionally present themselves as medical offices where abortions are offered. But in truth they are complete scams. They lure in frightened & vulnerable pregnant girls/women seeking abortions and instead the Christian pro-lifer staff members give them patently false information that abortions can give you cancer, increase your chances for depression/suicide, etc. and use intense pressure techniques to intimidate the woman into keeping the baby. These ‘crisis centers’ also imply they offer birth control, but instead they recipients of even more millions from the Federal government to push “abstinence only” programs.

Film Screening: 'God Loves Uganda'

Want to see a documentary film that is guaranteed to blow your mind?!?

What if I told you that American extremist Evangelicals were responsible for the draconian Ugandan anti-homosexuality law which includes the DEATH PENALTY!

Join us for the astounding film God Loves Uganda .

Seeing it dragged me through a gamut of emotions from shocked, disturbed, infuriated, to profound revulsion in humankind's potential for cruelty, evil and deceit.

You'll discover how AMERICAN religious fundamentalists became the puppeteers pulling the strings of the Ugandan government. And they're not done yet. They are targeting other African countries, Russia, etc.

Please, don't miss this film. After seeing it you'll understand why the Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled these American religious organizations Hate Groups.

Sun Aug 10, 2014 12:00 AM - Freedom From Religion Foundation Meeting

Speaker: Preston Long, D.C., Ph.D. - Chiropractic Abuse: An Insider's Lament

Location:Macayo's Central
4001 N Central Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85012

This meeting is officially sponsored by the Freedom From Religion Foundation – Valley of the Sun Chapter. However, we’re extending the invitation to Americans United – Greater Phoenix members too due to the importance of the subject matter.

The increasing denial of science is becoming more deadly with the anti-vaccination folks, the ‘alternative medicine’ followers, etc. Sunday’s speaker, Dr. Preston Long, D.C., Ph.D. attended chiropractic medical school and had a practice for many years until he ‘saw the light’. Since he became aware of the problems with chiropractic & ‘alternative medicines’ he quit his practice, returned to the university, earned a Ph.D., became an author and is now an ‘evangelical’ consumer/patient advocate to help others seek evidence based medical remedies, not dubious ‘alternative’ medical treatments. This presentation is especially timely since the American Heart Association just issued a report August 7, 2014, indicating that certain neck manipulations were likely responsible for between 8 – 25% of strokes in people under the age of 45!!

Some of you may have already made up your mind about chiropractic medicine. Others of you may have heard some negative comments about chiropractic or ‘alternative medicine’ but aren’t quite sure what the fuss is all about. Maybe you’ve even seen a chiropractor in the past & your problem went away so you just haven’t paid much attention to the rumblings you hear from time-to-time. Maybe you may have a family member or friend that sees their chiropractor weekly and swears that he/she is a miracle worker! No matter how much, or how little, you know on the subject, you’re guaranteed to learn something new! So if you’re interested in hearing the real deal from a former practicing chiropractor, please join us for a fun & informative meeting with like-minded friends to hear Dr. Long’s story together!

At the meeting we will have a very limited supply of his latest book Chiropractic Abuse: An Insider's Lament (2013). It can be purchased at discount & Dr. Long will be happy to sign it for you as long as supplies last. Even if you might not be interested in reading the book for yourself, it would be a perfect gift for that friend or family member who is “addicted to their chiropractor” and refuses to listen to reason.

The event is free & open to the public. If you’d like to support Macayo’s (we’d appreciate it if you would!) have a wonderful lunch and/or a margarita or two! However no purchase is necessary. Please feel free to bring your family & friends! Dr. Long will use his expertise & humor to inform us about this very serious subject that wastes money, diverts people from seeking cures that might actually benefit them, and might even save you, or a loved one, from potential harm.

This is presentation is going to be a real eye-opener! PLEASE DO NOT MISS IT!!!

Does it seem Americans have some crazy irrational attitudes about sex? Are you angry sometimes when you feel guilty about sex from the misguided messages you got from your parents, religion, society, etc.?

Are you angry that the Religious Right bullies in the Arizona Legislature have been chipping away at women’s reproductive rights?

Do you just shake your head when you hear Fox News’ ‘pundits’ hysterically rant about how hurricanes & earthquakes are caused by God’s wrath about America’s immorality?

Does it drive you absolutely insane that schools don’t provide medically accurate & age appropriate sex education because the religious zealots like Cathi Herrod & the Center for Arizona Policy insist that we teach ‘abstinence only’ programs even though research clearly indicates THEY DON”T WORK?!?!

Well…have I got an event for you!

ASU’s Secular Student Alliance and Americans United for Separation of Church & State – Greater Phoenix Chapter proudly present Dr. Marty Klein, a Marriage & Family Therapist, Certified Sex Therapist, author, lecturer, and exceptionally amusing “Separation of Church & State SEXPERT”!

Description: Sex and religion are constantly in the news this election year—typically in ways quite aggravating to the majority of moderate, rational Americans, both religious & non-religious. With razor-sharp wit and 30 years of clinical experience, Dr. Marty Klein will analyze the news, describing what he calls America’s War On Sex. “The Religious Right is using the issue of sexual regulation to undermine secular democracy,” he says. “Its War On Sex uses phony categories, dangerism, junk science, and a broad Sexual Disaster Industry. It is successfully re-branding private sexual expression into public behavior, which is therefore subject to public control.” Birth control, sex education, strip clubs, pornography, broadcast indecency, sex research—they’re all subject to increasing regulation and a massive disinformation campaign by the Religious Right, supported by cynical politicians and an amoral mass media. It’s more than a war on women, or a war on liberals, says Dr. Klein—it’s a war on sex. Dr. Klein’s books & DVDs will be available for purchase & signing immediately following the presentation/Q&A.

All known species on Earth have descended from a single ancestor. They therefore all use the same core chemistry and the same molecular biology. Thus, they together represent just one independent example of "life" as a phenomenon, biasing our view of the phenomenon in general.

Accordingly, nothing has the potential of altering that view of life more than having in hand a second example of life. We might find that second example on Mars, Titan, or elsewhere in the cosmos. We might find it hiding on Earth. However, the most direct way to get a second example seems now to be to create it in the laboratory. We will describe our recent efforts to create a "synthetic biology".

BIO:

Steven Benner is a Distinguished Fellow at the Westheimer Institute within the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution, which he founded after serving on the faculty at Harvard, the ETH, and the University of Florida. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale in 1976, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard in 1979. His research combines the physical sciences with natural history. He has contributed to the emerging fields of synthetic biology, paleogenetics, evolutionary bioinformatics, planetary biology and astrobiology. His most recent book is: "Life, the Universe, and the Scientific Method."

Dr. Andrew Jacksonan advocate for the religious clauses of the first amendment of the Constitutio As an advocate for the religious clauses of the first amendment of the Constitution, Dr. Jackson will talk about
(1) the definition of the term “religion” and its application to the religious clauses of the first amendment

(2) the historical and modern usage of the phrase, “separation of Church and State”

(3) his concern how this phrase discriminates against the Christian Church resulting in the neglect of other religions that are active in the public square

(4) and how this phrase is out-of-date in light of the America’s multi-religious society.

His goal is to further respectful discussion between Christian leaders and organizations active in protecting America from endorsing the establishment of a religion.

Dr. Andrew Jackson earned his bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees in Bible and Christian theology. He grew up in Seattle and served for over 25 years as a Protestant pastor (ordained in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church) in two very large churches, and as a seminary professor. Although he has traveled worldwide and experienced the regions of all major religions, his specialties are the Islamic nation of Turkey and the Middle East. Today, his primary focus is on writing and teaching world religions at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. His wife, Barbara, is an emergency room nurse, and he has three adult children and three grandchildren.

Sun Jan 13, 2013 6:00 PM - Evolutionary Christianity

Speaker: Bruce Sanguin

Location:Central United Methodist Church
1875 N Central Avenue
Phoenix

This is not an AU event, but may be of interest to our AU members.

"For those interested in the emerging new “Evolutionary Christianity”, please see the event below sponsored by the Arizona Foundation for Contemporary Theology. It is indeed a very positive step when religions outspokenly embrace evolution, versus trying to deny it!"

Anne Mardick
President
AU Greater Phoenix Chapter

Everything and everybody is involved in a sacred, evolutionary process, including the Christian faith. What might it look like for a church to consciously embrace and celebrate the "blessed unrest" that is coursing through us as a work of Spirit? We have more questions than answers at this point, and that's part of the adventure.

Bruce Sanguin

The Reverend Bruce Sanguin is the Minister of Canadian Memorial United Church and Centre for Peace in Vancouver, B.C. He is a leader in evolutionary Christianity, teaching evolutionary theology and practice throughout North America and Australia. Bruce is passionate about updating the theology and practice of the church in light of the reality of evolutionary processes and the creative impulse of the universe. He is the author of five books, including If Darwin Prayed: Prayers for Evolutionary Mystics and Darwin, Divinity and the Dance of the Cosmos: an Ecological Christianity. His latest is The Advance of Love, which is a series of reflections on the Christian scriptures through the lens of evolutionary spirituality.

Bruce posts regularly at www.brucesanguin.com.
