Yesterday the Secular Coalition for Arizona
had a tour at the Arizona State Capital for anybody who was a member of the various atheist groups that they represent.
Some of those groups are:
Freedom From Religion Foundation Valley of the Sun Chapter,
Freethought Arizona, Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix,
Military Association of Atheists & Freethinkers Arizona Delegation,
Or Adam Congregation for Humanistic Judaism,
Phoenix Atheist Meetup Group,
Secular Humanist Jewish Circle (SHJC),
Sedona/Verde Valley Secular, Freethinkers,
Secular Student Alliance at Mesa Community College,
Secular Student Alliance at Northern Arizona University,
and Americans United for Separation of Church and State Phoenix Chapter.
Representative Juan Mendez
who is an atheist representing the Tempe Area
for District 26 gave us a tour of the House and for part of that tour he took us on to the House floor.
I was shocked to see that three of the representatives whose desks I was standing next to had a Christian BIBLE on their desk.
Even though I am an atheist I don't have a problem with people who believe in the supernatural, but a Bible belongs in a building in the private sector. Not in a government building the professes to keep church and state separate.
The there representatives who had bibles on their desks were: Kelly Townsend - District 16, Anthony Kern - District 20, Heather Carter - District 15.
I am kind of confused about Anthony Kern - District 20. He is not listed on the House web page as a member for District 20. Instead Paul Boyer and Carl Seel are listed for Representatives for District 20.
I have included 3 photos of the Bibles at these representatives desks along with their name tags.
I apologize for the photo the Bible at Kelly Townsend desk because it is over exposed and you can read see the word Bible on the book.
