Chandler National Day of Prayer
Thursday, May 2, 2012
7:30 am
City Hall Courtyard
Chandler City Hall
175 S Arizona Avenue
Chandler, Arizona
The handout I have says:
This years theme is "One Nation Under God" based on the verse from Psalms 33:12 which states "Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord"
It goes on to say "for more information call the Chandler NDP Task Force at (480)516-3022"

Wow! The city of Chandler has a:

National Day of Prayer Task Force

I shot a photo of the handout and here it is:

What does the Arizona Constitution say on this?

Article 2 Section 12 is pretty specific and says:

No public money or property shall be appropriated for or applied to any religious worship, exercise, or instruction, or to the support of any religious establishment.
I guess the members of the Chandler City Council think they are royal rulers who are above the law..

Here is a photo of the flyer announcing the Chandler National Day of Prayer on a billboard in the Chandler Senor Center

I got to the event about 5 minutes after it ended so I didn't get to shoot any photos of it, but these are the photos I took after the event.

They had parking signs notifying the public of the Chandler Government Sponsored Prayer Event. I bet they spent tax dollars making that sign, which is a violation of the Arizona Constitution.

They had a big sign in the background hanging from a rope that said "National Day of Prayer".

Again I bet they spent tax dollars making that sign, which is a violation of the Arizona Constitution.

They had sign on the speakers podium that said "One God".

Again I bet they spent tax dollars making that sign, which is a violation of the Arizona Constitution.

People attending the Chandler National Day of Prayer at the Chandler City Hall
I think these 4 guys are VIPs. Perhaps the minister who spoke at the event, or perhaps members of the Chandler City Council.

More of the people who attended the Chandler National Day of Prayer at the Chandler City Hall. I suspect some of them are city of Chandler employees or perhaps members of the Chandler City Council.

If any of them were city employees who were being paid with tax dollars that is also a violation of the Arizona Constitution.

Chandler claims no government money was spent on the event.

Subject:Request for Public Records

********,

thank you for the request. Here is the information you requested:

According to some literature I saw there is also a special Chandler city government phone line dedicated to the National Day of Pray event on NPD task force as it was called. That number is: (480)516-3022"

This phone number was a private line.

My request for public records per the Arizona Public Records law are:

1) how much money did the city of Chandler spend putting on this event?

No City funds were expended on this event.

2) how many hours of Chandler employees time were used to arrange the event and clean up after the event?

Employees coordinated the activity and cleaned up on their own time.

3) Who were the speakers at the event?

Chaplains from the Police and Fire departments as well as Councilmember Kevin Hartke and Vice Mayor Jeff Weninger.

4) How many Chandler city employees attended the event?

Estimates were approximately 40-50 employees who attended on their own time.

5) What prayers and religious verses were said at the event?

There is no public record of what was said at the event
